The Web's effectiveness as an information tool hinges on the applications that make the most efficient and functional use of its data. For enterprises, the key to deriving value from Web-based information is to invest in applications that deliver the right information to the right people at the right place and time. This involves providing access to real-time mission-critical information that efficiently integrates internal and external content, and content engineering applications that make business information "actionable." Enterprise content solution providers (CSPs), also referred to as syndicators and aggregators, are now creating the tools and infrastructure for businesses to manage, acquire, or deliver dynamic content and make it an actionable component of business intelligence. Whether these applications are part of an enterprise portal platform, developed in-house, or independently outsourced, enterprises are increasingly relying on content management solutions as part of their e-business infrastructure to make greater actionable use of internal and external information. The enterprise market yields a lucrative opportunity for content solution providers previously targeting dot-coms and Internet pure-play content providers. However, content aggregation is merely a technical step along the way to understanding how dynamic content can be put to work for business intelligence and other business uses. To the enterprise, the value of enterprise-focused news and information is contingent upon the applications to organize, customize, and dispatch the information to suit the needs of the enterprise.
