Free talks aim to guide printers through new technologies and the tough economy.
Printing Industries of New England (PINE) has set the agenda
and announced several free seminars for the upcoming Northeast Graphics show,
scheduled for Nov. 20-22, 2003, in the Worcester Centrum in Worcester,
Mass.
The show, which features nearly 50 vendors, including the Creo, Oce,
Xerox, Kodak Polychrome Graphics, C.P. Bourg and Printable Technologies, as well
as several educational seminars, is the only printing, converting and graphic
communications expo designed specifically for printers in the New England
region, PINE said.
The four free seminars include:
* How Digital
Color is Impacting the Graphic Arts. Scheduled for Nov. 20 at 11:15 a.m.,
this features Tony Federico, chief engineer at Xerox for the iGen3, who will
speak on several topics, including variable data, digital printing and color
management. In addition to the seminar, PINE said a full version of Adobe
GoLive, Adobe's Web creation software package valued at $396, will be awarded to
an attendee of the talk.
* Working to
Make the USPS and Printing Industry Stronger. Scheduled for Nov. 21 at 10:15
a.m., this features John Powers, the U.S. Postal Service’s Massachusetts
district manager. Powers will explain a new raft of postal reforms and discuss
their ramifications for the print industry. PINE said a full version of Adobe
InDesign, valued at $700, will be awarded to one attendee of this seminar.
* Ancillary
Services: The Future of the Printing Industry. Scheduled for Nov. 21 at
noon, this features Frank Romano, the Roger K. Fawcett Distinguished Professor
at Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Print Media. Since revenue from
ancillary services — those services not directly a part of manufacturing
printing material — account for 15% to 20% of the typical printing company’s
overall revenues, Romano will discuss trends affecting these services and how
printers can exploit them for financial gain. Romano will also sign and award a
copy of "The GATF Encyclopedia of Graphic Communications" to one attendee.
* Advance
Screening Techniques in the 21st Century. Scheduled for Nov. 22 at 9 a.m.,
this panel discussion will examine recent claims that advanced screening
techniques can eliminate costs from the pressroom, add value to existing
equipment and produce superior quality, as well as why few New England shops
have adopted them. It will feature Ray Cassino of Heidelberg; Stanley Rosen of
Creo; Michelle Struchil of Screen; and Steve Musselman of AGFA. It will be
moderated by Rick Littrell of Littrell Associates. A copy of Adobe’s Creative
Suite -- which combines a full version of Photoshop, ImageReady, Illustrator,
InDesign and GoLive (an $1,150 value) -- will be awarded to one attendee.
In addition to the keynotes, the show features 18 seminars in three
tracks: Sales, Technology and Environment. These include “Winning and Keeping
Customers in a Tough Economy,” “Lightning Makeready,” “Developing an
Environmental Management System,” “Integrity Sells: The Business of Ethics,”
“Understanding Densitometry: Improving Pressroom Color Quality,” and “Ergonomics
for the Printing Industry,” among others.
