Intel to Support AMD-owned ATI Graphics

As Intel gears up for its latest platform for high-performance PCs and gaming machines, it is turning heads by promising to support boards from ATI, which is owned by rival AMD.

Intel is getting ready to unveil its "Skulltrail" high-performance gaming PC platform and trying to demonstrate that quad-core processing is as practical on the desktop as the server room.

The company plans to announce the platform -- officially the Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform -- at this week's 2008 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco

It will use a pair of Core 2 Extreme QX9775 processors, which offer clock speeds of 3.2GHz, a total of 12MB of L2 cache and a front side bus (FSB) of 1600MHz. The system's motherboard will also support multiple graphics cards, including Nvidia's SLI or ATI's Crossfire.
