HD-quality video and audio formats are coming to Flash 9 and to Adobe's AIR rich application development tool, both now in beta.

Adobe Systems' latest update for Adobe® Flash® Player 9 software, code-named Moviestar, will include support for the high-definition H.264 standard video and High Efficiency AAC audio standards . Both standards will also be supported by the Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) desktop application development software, and by Adobe's players for handheld devices, bringing high-definition video to the mobile world.

The main benefit to content developers will be reduced costs for video encoding and data distribution. H.264 is part of the Motion Picture Experts Group MPEG-4 standard, and is also known as MPEG-4 Part 10. It and the HE-ACC audio standard are already supported by a number of digital video authoring tools, and are part of Apple's Quicktime 7, as well as the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD high definition video player formats.

As a result, content developers will be able to use their existing tools and workflows for digital video production to author for Flash, reducing production times and the number of tools required. In addition, Adobe announced that it is working with other video encoding partners who currently support the two standard to ensure that their content will integrate well with Flash.

The beta of Adobe's new Flash player is available at the Adobe Labs website.
