MySpace Careers Adds to MySpace's Channel Strategy

Opinion: MySpace is a portal, but it's a portal built around personality.

Everything is bifurcating and bifurcating again into channels. Why can't we get away from this television metaphor? (I'm looking at you, Veoh and Yahoo Video.)

As Mike noted yesterday on TechCrunch, MySpace Careers has launched. The job search engine is powered by Simply Hired, which is partially owned by the New York Times. (I didn't know Simply Hired and Indeed were the same company, but apparently so.)

This is interesting news for MySpace given the recent New York Times article about how online profiles can screw up job searches.

MySpace is now replete with channels: MySpace Music, MySpace Comedy, MySpace Books, MySpace Blogs, and MySpace Filmmakers. I guess you could throw MySpace Video Search in there too.

This article in Mediaweek reports on the strategy behind these "controlled" portal pages, which are friendlier to brands that want to be associated with MySpace but are leery of the potential risks involved.

As I've said before, MySpace is a portal, it's just centered around ego instead of info.

Speaking of, has anyone heard from AOL's AIM Pages lately?
