A major update to the previous image processing software release includes speed enhancements and expanded metadata support.

Iridient Digital has released a significantly updated version of its RAW Developer application.

Brian Griffith, lead engineer and product manager for RAW Developer at Monterey, Calif.-based Iridient Digital Inc., spoke to Publish.com about this latest release, saying, "We're very fortunate to have users that like to offer detailed feedback on the product. With the initial release, faster preview-rendering performance was by far the number one request."

Griffith added, "For the 1.2 release, we made some major changes to the architecture of the image preview window. Updates to the preview are now much, much faster when the user is making interactive adjustments to the image. Many users now actually point out speed as an important advantage of the RAW Developer 1.2 release over other products."

Griffith said a metadata information window was also a very popular user request that was addressed with the 1.2 release.

This release also focused on faster performance in image processing, Griffith noted. "In general, faster performance just makes an application much more pleasant to work with. You can get more done in a shorter amount of time. For the professional photographer who may take hundreds, or even thousands, of photos a week, image processing time can really add up," Griffith said.

The updated version of RAW Developer 2.0 also aimed to reduce the image loading speed, and the company says that, depending upon the camera model, the image loading time can be reduced by as much as 25 percent.

There were also improvements made to the "As-Shot" white balance determination for several camera models, including, as noted in the release, all recent Canons with CR2 format files and several Minolta models as well. Additionally, there is improved support for auto rotation of images, and support for Adobe DNG files has been added.

The original version of RAW Developer was launched in December 2004. The update is free to all registered users.
