Quark plans to bolster its QuarkVista image editor with plug-ins from A Lowly Apprentice Production.

Quark Inc. announced on Wednesday the acquisition of A Lowly Apprentice Production Inc., a developer of plug-ins for desktop publishing software including QuarkXPress.

ALAP's products include Imposer and Imposer Pro, XPert Tools Pro and ShadowCaster. ALAP founder Paul Schmitt will join Quark as vice president of product development.

Interim Quark president Linda Chase called ALAP's products a "natural complement" that will work with Xpress' QuarkVista technology.

QuarkVista lets you edit images—including correcting colors and applying effects filters—directly in a QuarkXPress layout

Quark did not indicate how the development of ALAP products for Adobe Systems Inc. software like InDesign and Acrobat will be affected by this move.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. View the full news release here.
