NFL franchise uses a Flash-based screen saver to push timely content unobtrusively, sparking interest and fostering better ties with its fans.
The Baltimore Ravens are known for
their prowess on the football field. Now, a new Flash-based screen saver
technology is helping them score even more points with fans.
The NFL team was searching for a way to
directly access, and interact with, its legions of followers across the U.S.
More specifically, it wanted to leverage the power of the Internet to push
content on a regular basis to fans, rather than waiting for them to come to the
team’s Web site.
The team, with the help of developer ID
Society, pulled a piece of its Web content management system into a new team
screensaver based on ScreenTime Media’s ScreenTime for Flash. ScreenTime for
Flash, which works for both Windows and Mac desktops, converts Flash MX content
into easy-to-download interactive screen savers. It supports Flash MX features
such as dynamically updateable content, hyperlinks, XML and interactivity.
Once Ravens fans decide to download and
install the screen saver on their desktop, the Ravens site can download files
and settings each time the screensaver launches on the fan’s PC, whether or not
the user is currently logged on. Users can customize their screen saver to
download team news, game stats and even a multimedia screensaver skin that
changes on game day to match the team’s home or away uniform colors.
The result? A quick, easy and
interactive way to keep fans informed and interest levels up. And although the
Ravens aren’t yet using this feature, ID Society says that the screensaver can
actually be used to sell advertising and has features that enable organizations
to track how users interact with the updates and if they click on sponsored ads.
