Sprint announces TV Live, a new multimedia service that offers users live broadcast programming through mobile devices.Sprint unveiled the most recent addition to its suite of PCS Vision Multimedia Services, with the launch Monday of
Sprint TV Live.
Sprint and MobiTV Inc. have collaborated on this project to offer customers nationwide access to live programming from a number of TV stations (including Fox News Channel, The Learning Channel and Discovery) through select PCS Vision phones, according to a recent news release.
"In the marketplace, nobody offers the extensive array of live content that we do," Dale Knoop, general manager of multimedia services at Sprint Nextel, told Ziff Davis Internet. "This is the first channel offered within Sprint TV that is dedicated to linear content, similar to what you would see on a cable TV service."
Looking to maintain its position in the wireless multimedia market, Sprint said it will make available up to 19 streaming channels through the Sprint PCS Network. Users can access the new programming option through their multimedia-enabled mobile phones, no downloads required.
The Sprint TV Live service operates on a "TV-like" interface for easy navigation, offering users breaking news coverage, sports highlights, music videos and more. While Sprint's Basic TV service offers viewers short video clips, TV Live takes it to the next level by broadcasting full-length shows in their entirety.
Additionally, Sprint TV Live channels stream (to eligible handsets) at up to 15 frames per second to offer a high-quality picture, according to the release.
Sprint's TV service includes content from ABC, FOX Sports, NFL Network, The Weather Channel, Fashion TV, CMC and more. Information on programming details and additional channels are available on the MobiTV Web site.
MobiTV, a global multimedia network and technology company, helped to make Sprint TV Live available by working with TV stations and content providers to broadcast network programming via a Java application that runs on the user's wireless device.
