The new beta of the native Mac OS X browser includes built-in SVG support and a system that detects when downloaded files are moved or deleted.

The Mozilla Foundation, maker of the Firefox browser, released Beta 2, Version 1.0 of its Macintosh-specific "Camino" browser on Tuesday.

The native Mac OS X browser, which uses the Gecko HTML engine, has "made great improvements in rendering accuracy and speed, bookmarks and history management, preferences and plug-in support," according to the release notes from Mozilla.

Changes in the feature set of this beta have forced Mozilla to no longer support Mac OS X 10.1. Mozilla advises users still using Mac OS X 10.1 to download the release notes for Camino 0.8.4.

Some of the improvements in the latest beta include:

  • HTML support
  • Built-in SVG support
  • Warning sheets when clearing the cache and history in preferences
  • A file system notification to detect when downloaded files are moved or deleted, and update the user interface accordingly

In related news, Microsoft Corp. officially ended support for Internet Explorer on the Mac on Dec. 31, 2005, and said it plans to cease allowing downloads of IE on Mactopia as of Jan. 31.
