PayPal credits all PayPal transaction fees for one day to thank customers for their patience.

To stay ahead, you have to be willing to admit you’ve made a mistake. Because of its recent site issues, PayPal thanked its customers with a whole day of crediting PayPal transaction fees incurred on October 28, 2004 from 12:00 a.m. PDT to 11:59 p.m. PDT. The company’s online statement said, “Recently, the PayPal site had technology issues that may have hindered your ability to conduct business using PayPal. To show our appreciation for your continued business, we're going to credit you for PayPal transaction fees incurred on October 28, 2004, between 12:00:00 AM PDT and 11:59:59 PM PDT.” The credit was designed to thank PayPal customers for their patience as the company worked the aforementioned site issues. Earlier this month, PayPal’s Web site had server issues following an upgrade to their systems, and users were unable to complete payments via the site.

All of the PayPal domestic and cross border payments were eligible for credits, and PayPal did not set a limit on the number a customer could receive. In an online statement, the company called the day its “Pay Pal Thank You Day.” A PayPal company spokesperson said the company did not expect Thank You Day to have a material impact on revenue for the quarter.

It will be interesting to see how many other companies follow this example in the future as a way to keep primary customers happy. Internet users are increasingly pushing companies for more accountability and customer service, and PayPal has effectively raised the bar on what it’s willing to do, in order to keep its customer’s satisfaction on high.
