Review: Podcasting is everywhere these days, but how do you filter out the good Podcasts from the bad? Inside, a few Podcast suggestions for Web developers, creatives, coders and journalists.Your mom knows what to do with it. And odds aren't bad that your mom knows what
Podcasting is.
According to a recent study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, almost 7 million Americans have downloaded Podcasts. And they're downloading from media sources that have very big traditional audiences, including NPR, the BBC, and even the White House.
News and politics are all well and good, but what about Podcasts that speak to the creative professional?
There aren't too many Podcasts that speak specifically to the creative or publishing communities out thereat least not yet. (Unless you're a Mac Addict, in which there are more Podcasts than there are Mac users.)
Below, Publish.com lists some of the more interesting and edifying Podcasts for Web designers, slashdotters and tech geeks.
Or, if you want to find your own, may we suggest the excellent Odeo.com, the iTunes Podcast directory, and Podcastalley.com, in that order.
This Week in Tech
If you've got to start somewhere, start with TWIT, the most downloaded Podcast in the world. It's like listening to a morning radio show, but the hosts actually talk about stuff you care about.
Podcasts for Web Developers
Web Design is a visual medium, but there are quite a few Podcasts that speak to the vicissitudes of online design.
WebDevRadio talks about everything from CSS to server testing. WebTalkRadio is a similar Podcast in which hosts Rob and Dana Greenlee talk about innovations in Web publishing.
If you're a Web production aficionado or professional, you'll want to check out Digital Production Buzz.
Photoshop users, be sure to scan 2 Minute Photoshop Tricks, and inDesign users should listen to inDesign 411.
For you coders out there, we recommend the popular Ruby on Rails Podcast.
Tech News Junkies
If you want to know what's news in the tech world, check out the utterly fascinating digg.com, a social bookmarking and technology news Web site driven by user selected articles.
Highly energized (and frankly, giggly) hosts Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht, both former G4TV hosts, present their thoughts on the top stories of the week from Digg.com, as well as a weekly beer review, which they consume throughout the half hour show. It's about as democratic a Podcast as one can get. Also available as a video download.
If Digg.com isn't enough for you, check out the Slashdot Review for the inside tech scoop, or listen to NPR's Technology Podcast for the mainstream stories.
For Journalists and Creatives
Creative Cow is a must-listen for video, audio and design pros. Future Tense is a great resource for well-reported stories and commentary on the intersection of tech and politics.
