del.icio.us, the first Web service to use tagging, is down following a power outage that disrupted the service's servers and indexes.Update: The del.icio.us Web site is back online.
del.icio.us, a free social bookmarking service and the first service to employ tagging, is offline today following a power outage last week that disrupted its servers.
"We've taken everything offline to properly rebuild and restore everything," read a note on the del.icio.us blog, dated December 18th.
"I apologize and hope to have this resolved as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued patience."
del.icio.us founder Joshua Schacter had not returned attempts to reach him as of this writing.
It was not immediately clear how long the service had been down. Several blogs have noted that del.icio.us was experiencing intermittent problems throughout last week.
del.icio.us was acquired by Yahoo! on December 9th. Financials of the deal were not disclosed.
"We just acquired them. It's only been a week, but obviously these are some of the things we'll be helping them with," said a Yahoo spokesperson.
Yahoo personnel stepped in to help the del.icio.us team yesterday after Schachter realized the del.icio.us servers had encountered a fatal error.
Yahoo is providing personnel and new equipment. A Yahoo spokesperson did not have an estimated time for when del.icio.us would be back online.
del.icio.us is widely regarded as one the first "Web 2.0" companies. Schacter is credited with being the first person to use the taxonomic system of tagging.
Schachter created del.icio.us in 2003 as a way for himself and his friends to save and share Web pages they visited.
The service is also used by bloggers to list link rolls on their sites.
del.icio.us is not the only growing "Web 2.0" company to experience uptime problems recently. TypePad, a developer of self-publishing software for blogs, was offline for approximately twelve hours last week when its primary disk system crashed.
Bloglines, the most popular RSS feed service on the Web, experienced scalability problems earlier in the year. They are upgrading their data center today.
