The latest release serves up a new template-driven content management online publishing system.

Press Publisher has updated its online publishing service with the release of Press Publisher 2.0. The latest version adds an integrated Calendar of Events feature and a Subscriber Management System giving publishers a rights-management system for articles.

The online publishing service is targeted at giving non-technical publishers a more economical solution to maintaining or launching content online.

Jason Bailey, President of Press Publisher, based in Atlantic City, N.J. said, "The system is targeted at anyone wishing to publish an issue-based online publication, such as online magazines, newsletters and e-zines."

Bailey said the main advantage of the hosted application is its flexibility and ease of use. "If you can word process, you can use Press Publisher," he said.

Press Publisher provides a WYSIWYG editor so that composing articles themselves is no different from composing in a word processing program.

The typing step can even be eliminated by cutting and pasting from a word processing program and then adjusting the layout and design within the Press Publisher system.

Press Publisher 2.0 features a flash tutorial that takes a user through all the administrative steps. A demo of the tutorial can be accessed at the company Web site here.

Version 2.0 also enhances the administrative options and provides a newsletter mailing option that enables subscriber additions featuring announcements or new issues, special articles, events and other news to be sent.

The system features auto-publish, automatic archiving, a logon and subscription process. In addition, it offers distributed responsibility, according to Bailey, where each author, editor, and publisher has access to create and update their issues, departments, columns and articles on the fly.

Bailey said features in advanced development for Press Publisher later releases include giving users advertising management, photo albums and PDF documents capability.

The Press Publisher system is based on a monthly subscription fee similar to Web site hosting services. The pricing starts at $39 per month and includes incorporation of the client's current Web site design, or the option of templates available through Press Publisher.

Moving and simplifying online publishing capabilities to general users is becoming more prevalent as evidenced not only by this hosted offering, but by the recent Project Comet announcement from the San Francisco, Calif.-based Six Apart Ltd.

Six Apart has created the new technology platform called Project Comet to make blogging accessible to the mainstream.

Project Comet gives users the ability to create a customized personal Web blog and incorporate media, including music, photos, videos and other blogs with drag and drop functionality.

Project Comet's expected release is in early 2006.
