Mass-market phones deliver interactive Flash experiences.
Macromedia has licensed
Flash Lite 1.1 to
Samsung Electronics. Flash Lite is the Macromedia Flash Player profile designed for mobile
phones. According to a statement issued by Macromedia, Samsung's new Flash
Liteenabled handsets provide graphical user interfaces and rich interactive
experiences and are already available in Korea. Subsequent models will be
deployed in European, U.S. and Korean markets.
The Flash Lite profile targets those mass-market phones that
lack sufficient processing power or memory to support the entire Flash Player 7
feature set available on the desktop, according to Macromedia's Website. The
Flash rendering engine can deliver consistent experiences across operating
systems, processors and screen sizes.
Flash Lite 1.1 provides OEMs with a single player for
playback of animations using SVG-T (SVG-Tiny) and Flash. Network connectivity
enables Flash content to make dynamic server queries, and scripting commands
give developers the opportunity to create Flash content that accesses handset
features, such as sending multimedia messages, dialing and checking the network
status. Version 1.1 also includes audio support for the MP3, PCM, ADPCM and SMAF
formats.
"Macromedia Flash Lite 1.1 sets the standard for mobile rich interactive
experiences. As a proven technology, it improves our user interface development
and improves the end user experience," said Samsung Executive VP of Design
Geehong Yoon in a press release announcing the licensing agreement.
