The release aims to give SMBs simple, complete content management functionality at an affordable price.

Simian Systems has released its flagship content management system software, Sitellite 4.2, intended to bring small and midsize businesses the power of content editing at an economical price.

With the release of Sitellite 4.2 comes the newly added Xed 2 Word Processor feature, which the company terms a "word processor-like" Web editing interface for users. The Xed 2 is a WYSIWYG editor embedded directly into Sitellite for use in the customer's existing Web browser.

Josh Bachynski, vice-president of sales for Manitoba, Canada-based Simian Systems Inc., said the Xed 2 Word Processor allows any user to log in to a secret location on his or her Web site and add, modify or delete images and content such as news stories, products and advertorials.

"Xed 2 is tailored for non-technical users to make it easy to edit your own Web site without having to call tech support. If you can use a word processor, you can edit the text and images on your Web site," Bachynski said.

Bachynski also said that Sitellite 4.2 stands out in comparison to Macromedia Contribute (now owned by Adobe Systems Inc.), in that Contribute offers a limited number of licenses and allows only one user to edit the Web site from the license install location.

"Sitellite 4.2 Professional comes with an unlimited user license, so an unlimited number of people can log in simultaneously to edit the Web site. The Sitellite 4.2 editing process is managed in Sitellite through a 'newspaper-like' workflow that includes submission and approval status built in to the process," Bachynski said.

In addition, unique to other competing offerings in this price range, Xed 2 gives non-technical users the ability to access and add advanced Web components, including shopping carts, Weblogs, contact forms and discussion forums.

To add components, users simply click on existing widgets from the components list in the Web editing interface. Developers can also incorporate custom widgets in the list for end users to select and insert into existing Web pages, Bachynski said.

Among the modules included in Sitellite 4.2 Professional for enhancing and speeding the Web development process are SiteGallery, SitePresenter, SiteQuotes, SiteStreamer, SiteTemplate and SiteWiki.

Sitellite 4.2 Professional users range from million-dollar corporations such as ABC Radio and New Flyer to large educational institutes like the University of Winnipeg, Bachynski said.

The Professional Edition is licensed in two ways, per Web site and per server. Both license options include unlimited user accounts. The per-Web site license costs $2,000 and the server license costs $20,000 for single Web server.

For full licensing information see the company's Web site.
