Open development initiative allows bloggers to add and develop features for their blogs.

Six Apart announced March 30 the availability of its open widget initiative, which allows TypePad users to quickly add interactive features, such as photo sharing, games and job listings, to their blogs.

Widgets are free and currently available from dozens of partner companies. A full list of widget partners is available on the Six Apart Web site. Developers interested in creating their own TypePad widgets can contact Six Apart here.

"What this really does is simplify the process for TypePad users to add features to their blogs," said Michael Sippey, Six Apart's general manager of TypePad. "It shows off to users what's possible."

Widgets are typically small snippets of CSS, HTML and JavaScript. With the widget project, Six Apart joins the current trend among companies to open development on their platforms.

Microsoft made a big splash last November when it announced its live.com platform, which, among other features, allows users to develop widgets to integrate into their own portal sites.
