Whether you do it yourself or pay a service provider, here is all you need to understand.

The content. The content can consist of audio, video, images, text or animation. A quarterly investors relations call, for example, may involve audio only, while a training or demonstration session would consist of video and audio with some text as well.

The digital format. Once you’ve captured the content, the audio/video signal must be converted into a streaming media file format. Windows Media, Real Media and QuickTime are the most common.

The encoding. High-quality audio and video files can be very large, so in order for the data to stream efficiently over the Internet, it must be compressed (or encoded) into small packets of information.
The distribution. Once encoded, the data is ready to be sent to servers that in turn transmit the content to viewers via the Internet.
