The compression utility has been adapted to better serve the use it's often put to: backing up data. (PCMag.com)Zip utility publisher WinZip International LLC unveiled a new version of its compression utility for Windows, with improved manageability, automated data backup and the ability to zip files directly on CDs and DVDs.
WinZip 10.0 was created to significantly improve the usability and functionality of the utility, the company said.
The most significant change is in how the application handles data backup, according to WinZip President Edwin Siebesma. By adding newly automated tools through the WinZip Job Wizard, the company is hoping to streamline the type of backup tasks already being done by users.

"We've noticed that a lot of people use WinZip for data backup, which we hadn't anticipated," he said. "But it's a pain to have to manually choose which files to back up every time. It's tedious."
Also, during the laborious process of choosing the data to be backed up and compressing it, some users were in danger of overlooking important files, Siebesma added.
"This is not a full backup tool like Norton Ghost," he said. "But for people that just need to save their data, and are already using WinZip to do it, it's very useful."
